Understanding Types of US Visa

Certain visa types have additional requirements.

  • Purpose: The B-2 visa is for individuals who want to travel to the United States for tourism, vacation, or to visit family and friends. It allows short-term stays, usually up to six months.
  • Typical Use: Exploring the country, visiting relatives, or attending social events like weddings.
  • Purpose: The B-1 visa is for individuals traveling to the U.S. for business purposes, such as meetings, conferences, consultations, or contract negotiations.
  • Typical Use: Attending business meetings, trade shows, or negotiating deals. It does not allow employment in the U.S.
  • Purpose: The F-1 visa is for individuals wishing to study at an accredited U.S. institution, such as a university or language school. This visa allows students to live in the U.S. for the duration of their academic program.
  • Typical Use: Enrolling in a full-time degree program, English language program, or exchange student program.
  • Purpose: The H-1B visa is for skilled workers in specialty occupations, such as technology, engineering, or medicine. This visa allows foreign workers to be employed by a U.S. company in a specialized field.
  • Typical Use: Working in the U.S. for a specific employer in a designated specialty area. It typically requires a U.S. employer to sponsor the applicant.
  • Purpose: There are various other visa categories designed for specific situations, including:
    • J-1 Visa (Exchange Visitors): For individuals participating in exchange programs such as research scholars, interns, or au pairs.
    • K-1 Visa (Fiancé Visa): For foreign nationals who are engaged to a U.S. citizen and plan to marry within 90 days of entering the U.S.
    • O-1 Visa (Extraordinary Ability): For individuals with extraordinary skills or achievements in their field, such as athletes, artists, or scientists.

Each visa type serves a distinct purpose, whether for marriage, cultural exchange, or extraordinary talent.
